Volunteer Opportunities
The Community Policy and Management Team (CPMT) for the City of Roanoke which oversees local activities under the Comprehensive Services Act (CSA) is seeking greater parental involvement in this process. Therefore, we are recruiting parent volunteers to serve on one of several Family Assessment and Planning Teams (FAPT) or the Roanoke Inter-agency Council (RIC).
Each FAPT reviews the needs of certain at risk children and makes recommendations regarding service plans. Development of service plans involves the assessment of needs and identification of resources that might include provision of family and/or individual counseling, placement in a residential facility, involvement in a mentoring program, etc. The teams include members representing Roanoke City Schools, the Department of Social Services, Blue Ridge Behavioral Healthcare, Juvenile Justice – the 23rd District Court Services Unit, the Health Department and private providers of service. The addition of parent volunteers to this membership will help to ensure that a variety of perspectives and alternatives are considered in identifying and securing resources for at-risk children and their families.
We are also interested in increasing parental involvement on the RIC, local CPMT for CSA in Roanoke. This body is responsible for reviewing FAPT recommendations and approving the appropriation of funds to support proposed service plans. Membership on the RIC mirrors that of the FAPTs.

Job Description
Parents, 21 years of age or older, who reside in the City of Roanoke are invited to make application to serve on a Family Assessment and Planning Team (FAPT) or the Roanoke Interagency Council (RIC). Volunteers selected to serve will work cooperatively with representatives from several human service agencies to assist at-risk children/youth and their families access needed resources through the Comprehensive Services Act (CSA).
Applicants must be available to participate in a regularly scheduled FAPT meeting once a month for approximately 3 hours each session. (Volunteers to the RIC must be available to meet twice a month for approximately 2 hours at each regularly scheduled session).
Volunteer parents, with children of any age, should possess:
- a commitment to children/youth and related issues;
- a willingness to follow through on their commitments;
- some knowledge of at-risk children/youth and their behaviors, needs, etc
- "people skills" that include good communication skills, and
- an understanding of the need for confidentiality.
