Fair Housing
The Fair Housing Act covers most housing transactions including rentals, home sales, advertising, mortgage lending, home improvements, and zoning activities, but only if one is discriminated on the basis of one of the following protected classes as defined by federal, state, and /or local law, as follows:
  • Race
  • National Origin
  • Color
  • Religion
  • Sex
  • Familial Status
  • Handicap
  • The Commonwealth of Virginia law adds Elderliness, and
  • The City of Roanoke law adds Age and Marital Status

The City of Roanoke Fair Housing Board would like to provide a valuable resource to help you understand the federal, state, and local laws as they pertain to fair housing. To learn more about Fair Housing and how it affects YOU, the City of Roanoke's publication, Fair Housing, What You Need To Know booklet is provided for your convenience.

The City of Roanoke's Fair Housing Ordinance adopted March 1, 2004 is available for your convenience.

The City of Roanoke and the Fair Housing Board contracted with Housing Opportunities Made Equal (HOME) to conduct an Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing in Roanoke, Virginia report.

  • Note that a complaint regarding Age and/or Marital Status needs to be filed ONLY with the City of Roanoke Fair Housing Board as these are not considered "protected classes" as defined by federal and state law.

The Virginia Fair Housing Board has officially promulgated the new regulations requested by the Virginia Apartment & Management Association, Inc. that lowers the Fair Housing certification fees. This update from the Virginia Fair Housing Board is available here for your convenience.
