Parks and Greenways

The City of Roanoke is the ultimate outdoor destination. More than 10 miles of greenways wind through the city linking natural beauty with urban centers. You can bike to your favorite restaurant or shop, have a picnic with friends, fish, play with your dogs, or volunteer to keep the space clean and enjoyable. The possibilities are endless.

There are also more than 60 parks in the City of Roanoke for your enjoyment. You can rent a picnic shelter for a community event any time of the year, and families can take advantage of our numerous playgrounds. If you are into sports, many of our parks have tennis and basketball courts and Wasena Park offers a large skateboarding park. In May 2009, the city gained its first off-leash dog park in Highland Park. The dog park offers a small dog area as well as a large dog area.

Perhaps the most recognizable park in the city is Mill Mountain Park. Outdoor Recreation is plentiful on the mountain and bikers and runners can take advantage of the trail system. Mill Mountain is also the home of the famed Mill Mountain Star. Another well known and loved park is Carvins Cove Natural Reserve, located near Hollins University. It is the second largest municipal park in the nation.
