The City of Roanoke Fair Housing Board would like to provide a valuable resource to help you understand the federal, state, and local laws as they pertain to fair housing. To learn more about Fair Housing and how it affects YOU, contact fairhousing@roanokeva.gov or call (540) 853-5681.

The Fair Housing Act covers most housing transactions including rentals, home sales, advertising, mortgage lending, home improvements, and zoning activities, but only if one is discriminated on the basis of one of the following protected classes as defined by federal, state, and /or local law, as follows:
  • Race
  • National Origin
  • Color
  • Religion
  • Sex
  • Familial Status
  • Handicap
  • The Commonwealth of Virginia law adds Elderliness, and
  • The City of Roanoke law adds Age and Marital Status

The City of Roanoke's Fair Housing Ordinance was adopted October 1, 2007.
