Carolina Avenue White Oak

The White Oak (Quercus alba) in the middle of Carolina Avenue in South Roanoke lived for 400 years before it fell on August 27, 2005. A new White Oak was planted in the same location on Arbor Day, April 28, 2006, in a ceremony with the neighborhood and the teachers and students from the nearby Crystal Spring Elementary School. The new tree was donated in honor of Nicholas and Megan Pace, grandchildren of Chick and Barbara Pace. Landscaping was done by the Roanoke Department of Parks and Recreation and the Mill Mountain Garden Club. As the plaque read, the original White Oak was mighty and beloved.
