Noteworthy Trees of Roanoke

Every month or two, we will add information on treasured trees in Roanoke. We define a Treasured Tree as one that is either a state or national champion, well known and loved by Roanokers, or a historic tree. Some selections have come from the American Forests' National Register of Big Trees or Virginia Tech's Virginia Big Tree Database. These use a point system based on the tree's circumference, height and canopy spread. The tree pictured below is from the book Remarkable Trees of Virginia by Nancy Ross Hugo and Jeff Kirwan, with photography by Robert Llewellyn. The Roanoke Valley Big Tree Register, started by William S. Hubard and maintained by Valley Beautiful, also is a good source of information on local trees.
