Public Meetings and Redevelopment Forums
To date, the City of Roanoke has held eight meetings to discuss redevelopment opportunities and the brownfields program.

Former Virginia Scrap Property, February 24, 2009, at the Municipal Building - This meeting was presented by the City of Roanoke and the Roanoke Redevelopment and Housing Authority (RRHA) regarding cleanup of the former Virginia Scrap site. RRHA acquired the property in 2008 and executed a purchase and redevelopment agreement with Carilion Clinic that provides for conveyance of the property to Carilion no later than October 30, 2009. Further assessment and cleanup of the site was discussed.

Mountain View/Norwich Corridor Plan - Open House, June 17, 2008, at Mountain View Recreation Center - This meeting followed up on the June 14, 2007, meeting regarding the creation of a plan for this target area. The creation of a Special Use District is being considered as part of the corridor plan. This district would include a mixture of uses from commercial and residential to limited light industrial such as woodworking shops, specialty millworking and furniture repair.

Review of Draft City-Wide Brownfield Plan, September 25, 2007, at the Municipal Building - This meeting followed up on the initial January 2007 public meeting that expressed the desire for the city to create a vision and establish priorities beyond the two target areas in our EPA Brownfield Grants. The meeting focused on redevelopment issues, potential brownfield corridors in the City and policy actions/incentives the City may pursue to facilitate redevelopment of brownfields.

Review of Draft Mountain View/Norwich Corridor Plan, September 20, 2007, at Norwich Recreation Center - This meeting reviewed specific brownfield redevelopment issues for this corridor along the Roanoke River in the Mountain View and Norwich neighborhoods. Discussion focused on long-term land use for the corridor based on input from the June 14th input meeting and strategies and policies to achieve those uses.

Mountain View/Norwich Corridor Plan, June 14, 2007, at Mountain View Recreation Center. The City of Roanoke has identified the Mountain View/Norwich area as one of two initial focus areas in the Brownfields Initiative. This meeting gave participants an opportunity to comment on the Brownfields Initiative and learn more about the varying aspects of the program. City staff gave a short presentation to the Mountain View/Norwich group on the Brownfields Initiative and requesting their input.

Redevelopment Forums, April 9-10, 2007, at the Municipal Building. In early April, two Redevelopment Forums were held, one geared toward property owners and another for developers, lenders, consultants and other business partners. Presenters included the City of Roanoke, Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, and the U.S. Enivronmental Protection Agency.

Introduction to City Brownfield Program, January 22, 2007, at the Municipal Building. This initial public meeting took place as an introduction to the City's Brownfields Initiative. The Rebirth of Redevelopment was presented by City of Roanoke staff.
