Adopt a Kid for Kamp
The Roanoke Police Department needs your help to make D.A.R.E. Camp 2009 a reality for at least 100 Roanoke City Public School students. Due to the recent tough economic times and fiscal cutbacks D.A.R.E. Camp is in jeopardy of being only partially funded for the first time since its inception at the Roanoke Police Department. We are asking businesses and citizens to help D.A.R.E. Camp become a reality by supporting "Adopt-A-Kid-for-Kamp" fundraising drive. Tuition for one child to attend the four day camp is $125. The camp is open to all Roanoke City Public School Students who are preparing to enter 6th grade and have successfully completed the D.A.R.E. program in elementary school. The D.A.R.E. or Drug Abuse Resistance Education program reaches children in elementary, middle, and high school, and teaches them about the dangers of drugs. Students also learn about making good life choices, building leadership skills, and the importance of possessing high self esteem. Those who attend D.A.R.E. Camp get a true camp experience by participating in canoeing, rock wall climbing, and horse back riding. They also take courses in arts and crafts, performing arts, and multi-media, just to name a few. The camp will be held in August at the Smith Mountain Lake 4-H Center.
