Accreditation Public Notice

Accreditation Assessment Team Invites Public Comment
The City of Roanoke E- 911 Communications Center is scheduled for an on-site assessment as part of a National program to achieve accreditation by verifying it meets professional standards administered by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), the accreditation program requires agencies to comply with up to 216 state-of-the-art standards in six basic areas: organization, direction and authority, human resources, recruitment and selection, training, and operations.

The assessors are Team Leader, Terry Clanton, Assistant Chief (Major) of the Kannapolis, NC Police Department and Cheri Pickard, Administrative Services Commander of the Alpharetta, GA Department of Public Safety. The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals, and visit offices, tower sites, and other locations where compliance can be witnessed.

Once the Commission’s assessors complete their review of the Communications Center they report to the full Commission, who will decide if the agency is to be granted accreditation status. Accreditation is awarded for three years, during which time the agency must submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with the standards under which they were initially accredited.

As part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments to the assessment team by calling (540) 853-2308 on Monday, December 10, 2007, between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. Telephone comments should be limited to 10 minutes per caller and must address the Emergency Communications ability to comply with CALEA communications standards.
