Inspectors and Inspections
The Building Inspectors’ Hours are from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. They are in the field usually until 4:00 pm each day. If you need to reach them, please contact them in the office between 4:00 pm & 5:00pm each day. The inspectors receive their inspection lists for the next day during this time and will contact you concerning your inspections for the next day after he has had an opportunity to review his schedule for the day if needed. Please note that the inspector is not able to schedule a specific time for an inspection.
Inspectors are not allowed to inspect an occupied residence without a responsible party (usually the permit holder) present with them during the inspection.
Requests for inspections MUST be placed on the division’s inspection request line at:

or on the Online Permit Center. Please do not call the inspectors directly to schedule an inspection. When requesting an inspection, you must provide the following information:
• Address of the job
• Permit number
• Type Permit
• Type inspection requested (footing, rough-in, final, etc,)
• Name of person making the request
• Contact or callback number of person making the request
Inspections must be requested not later than 4:00 PM to be placed on the inspector’s schedule for the next working day. Any request received after 4:00 PM will be placed on the schedule for the second working day.
Examples:
• Inspections request @ 3:30 PM; Tuesday 12/13/2005 will be placed on the inspection schedule for Wednesday 12/14/2005.
• Inspections request @ 4:15 PM Tuesday 12/13/2005 will be placed on the inspections schedule for Thursday 12/15/2005.
• Inspections request @ 4:05 PM on Thursday 12/22/2005 will be placed on the inspector’s schedule for Tuesday 12/27/2005.
• Inspections request anytime on Friday 12/23/2005 will be placed on the inspector’s schedule for Tuesday 12/27/2005.
Footings, foundations and water & sewer line inspections will be given a priority when requested to assist you in pours and covering open excavations. Same day inspections will be considered on an emergency basis only. For a same day inspections request to be considered, you must FIRST request the inspection through one of the methods described above. Be sure to indicate on your request that this is an emergency situation and you need an inspection as soon as possible. Same day inspections cannot be guaranteed and will only be performed if inspectors are available.
You must leave a call back number for same day requests.
The inspector will always leave written results of his inspection. Always look for a sheet at the jobsite indicating the inspection results. Never assume that you have permission to proceed without written confirmation.
Special Weather Conditions may affect the inspector’s ability to perform inspections. Should you have a question concerning inspections for a particular day, please contact the Inspections Scheduler at (540) 853-1142. If inspections are cancelled for any particular day, the inspector will contact you if you have provided a call back number when the inspection was requested.
Inspector Assignments:
Note: Inspectors carry Blackberry units and may be reached by e-mail at all times. This is the preferred method of contact since they are able to complete any inspection in progress and reply when time permits.
Please remember that more time on the phone equals less time available for inspections.
