Bedford Goes to War: The Heroic Story of a Small Virginia Community in World War II: This compelling story of Bedford County, Virginia, in World War II describes what happened to young men and women from Bedford who joined the military and those who remained on the homefront. The county lost more men per capita on D-Day than any other community in America, and throughout the war lost over 140 young men.

James W. Morrison is a writer of history, essays, fiction, and poetry. His 2004 book, Bedford Goes to War: The Heroic Story of a Small Virginia Community in World War II, was nominated for the 2005 Library of Virginia Literary Awards and, from 60 nonfiction books nominated, was selected as one of five finalists for the nonfiction People’s Choice Award, co-sponsored by the James River Writers and the Library of Virginia. In 1999, his drama, Bedford Goes to War, won first place in the Sedalia Center’s historical drama contest. The drama has been performed in Bedford County in 2000, 2001, and 2005, the last year as a fund raiser for the National D-Day Memorial. Two other books, prepared in 1993-94, are studies on international relations. He has won regional writing contests with his essays and short stories.
A graduate of Indiana and Columbia Universities and the National War College, he served for 30 years in the Department of Defense, including three years as a U. S. Army officer and nearly 27 years as a civilian executive in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, working on international affairs. In his retirement, he spends much of his time writing and doing volunteer work. He has served as president of the statewide Virginia Writers Club and its Valley Writers Chapter and leads the Lake Writers at Smith Mountain Lake, where he and his wife, Edie, live. The Morrisons have two grown children and two grandchildren.
