Roanoke Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association
The Roanoke Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association (CPAAA) was founded in January 2005 to bring together graduates of the City of Roanoke Citizen Police Academy, to promote and improve community relations and crime prevention awareness, and to assist the Roanoke Police Department when called upon. In November 2007, Chief Gaskins presented the Citizen Hero Award to the Alumni Association for their work and dedication to the department.
CPAAA activities include:
Changing batteries in Property Lifesaver equipment.
Putting together child identification kits.
Property assessments and vacation checks.
Distribute literature at DUI and occupant safety checkpoints.
Assist with the Memory Ride to benefit Project Lifesaver.
Supporting the Police Department at community events such as Citizens Appreciation Day and Crime Prevention Day.
Assisting with the Charity Golf Tournament to benefit Special Olympics and the Virginia Police Chief’s Foundation CYCLE Program.
Ushering at Police Department events.
Assisting the police recruits with the Blue Santa project, in which toys are given to children hospitalized during the holiday season.
Phone and reception duties as needed for the main Police Building and the Police Training Academy.
Assisting with Oktoberfest to benefit Crime Line, which offers monetary rewards to citizens who provide information leading to the arrest of an offender.
Assisting as needed with the Citizen Police Academy classes.
Role playing during training for police recruits and the Tactical Response Team.
Cleaning the Fallen Officer Memorial.
Holding an annual Officers Appreciation Dinner for the Police Department. Each year the association awards an Officer of the Year and Rookie of the Year.
The following CPAAA officers are elected to serve two-year terms as defined in Alumni bylaws: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Recording Secretary, and Corresponding Secretary. CPAAA is currently working on an application for nonprofit status.
Meetings are held at 6:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month at the Roanoke Police Academy located at 5401B Barns Avenue, Roanoke, VA 24019. For further information, or to obtain an application please contact the Roanoke Police Academy at (540) 853-2649.
