Patrol Bureau

The Patrol Bureau consists of more than 100 uniform officers that handle a variety of responsibilities, including those listed below.

Animal Control Unit
The Animal Control Unit enforces all state laws and city ordinances relating to animals. The unit investigates reported animal violations. Officers also issue citations and take other enforcement actions when necessary. The unit responds to animals creating public nuisances, animal bites and/or attacks on citizens, and animal abuse and neglect cases. Officers also educate the public on pet care and control, along with ensuring the licensing of dogs housed within the city. Click here for more information about pet waste. DARE/SRO Unit
The DARE/SRO Unit consists of law enforcement officers who work full-time in Roanoke middle schools and high schools to initiative positive communication between law enforcement and youth, and assist in disciplinary issues. The Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) Program is a series of classes taught by School Resource Officers (SRO’s) that focuses on drug abuse, negative influences and conflict resolution through non-violent means. The DARE/SRO Program involves parents, teachers, administrators and the community in addressing these issues.

Hit and Run Unit
The Hit and Run Unit is responsible for following up on investigations involving unsolved hit-and-run accidents, and all hit-and-run fatalities.

Power Shift
The Power Shift is responsible for assisting officers in responding to calls during peak hours, which are generally 5 p.m. to 3 a.m. This allows patrol officers to conduct follow-ups and attend community meetings during shift changes. The Power Shift also provides coverage during shift changes.

Street Crimes Unit
The Street Crimes Unit focuses on known high crime areas and areas that have been the location of frequent citizen complaints. Officers within the unit work closely with community groups, and utilize crime analysis and community policing techniques to identify crimes and areas most in need of increased police coverage. The unit also works on specialized assignments as needed.

Warrant Service Unit
The Warrant Service Unit is responsible for overseeing and ensuring all criminal warrants are served and persons named in the warrants are apprehended. Officers also conduct reviews of “cold” warrants in an effort to reduce the volume of on-hand warrants.
