Roanoke Parks & Recreation
Youth Scholarship Program


Purpose:

The Roanoke Parks and Recreation Youth Scholarship Program provides financial aid for eligible youth, up to and including age 17, who are without the financial means, an opportunity to participate in any Parks and Recreation classes, programs and activities.

Fund Makeup:

The fund is made up of monies received from tax deductible citizen contributions, Parks and Recreation fund raising activities and corporate donations.

Eligibility Guidelines:

Residents must be able to provide proof of financial hardship to the Department of Parks and Recreation. The Department of Parks and Recreation will verify all financial information in conjunction with the findings of the Department of Social Services. All information will be confidential and used only for the purpose of establishing eligibility for reduced fees. Residents meeting these requirements will be granted reduced user fees. The Recreation Superintendent will approve or disapprove scholarship based on the eligibility information provided and the fund availability.

Applicant must be 17 years of age or under. To determine eligibility, applicant=s guardian must present one of the following supporting documentation along with a scholarship application:

1. W-2 Tax Forms
2. Statement from the Department of Social Services
3. Other documented proof of need

For a financially disabled participant to meet the qualifying criteria to receive reduced rates, submittal of at least one of the following is needed:
      1. W-2 Tax Forms
      2. Statement from the Department of Social Services
      3. Other documented proof of need

For City residents each person and each program must be presented, case by case, to the Parks and Recreation Department for approval or disapproval and to determine the reduction to be given if approved. For more information call 853-2236.
