Telecommunications Division

The Telecommunications Division is responsible for the maintenance, design, removal and installation of the City’s two-way radio systems and telephone systems. The Division consists of a Telecommunication Administrator, two communications technicians for the radio section and a telephone technician and telecommunications analyst for the telephony section.

The radio section is responsible for over seeing the maintenance of our 800MHz Analog Simulcast Trunking System as well as maintaining approximately 800 portable and 650 mobile radios. They are also responsible for maintenance of the City’s Mobile Data system, jail, Courthouse, Greater Roanoke Transit Company, ValCor paging and Civic Center radio systems, Jail and Jail Annex CCTV systems, intercom systems, Public address systems, and mobile cameras. Satellite Down links at the Municipal Building are also handled by the Radio Shop.

The Telephony section is responsible for over seeing the maintenance of our PBX telephone system which consist of a Nortel 81C with 14 remote sites served by a sonnet fiber loop, fiber or T1. They also manage the PBX and make moves, additions and changes to all telephones on the PBX, handle billing issues, handle request for additional equipment through Verizon, handle trouble calls to Verizon and maintain 1,350 telephones.
