Summer Food Program
Each year from mid-June to mid-August, the Office on Youth/Community Education administers a USDA Summer Food Program which provides free breakfast and lunch meals to eligible city youth up to 18 years old. Summer 2001 approximately 38,800 meals were served. Youth from the community come to the food sites, generally located in a Roanoke Redevelopment & Housing Authority recreational facilities, where they must eat their meals on site. The Summer Food Program also offers temporary employment to one Summer Food Coordinator and ten site supervisors who monitor the program and distribute the meals. The Roanoke City School Food Services Department prepares, packages, and delivers the meals to the sites at a cost comparable to the school nutritional program.
Youth Employment
The Youth Services Division offers the opportunity for youth of the City of Roanoke to have employment through our Youth Services Aide and Summer Intern positions. You may apply online for these summer positions. You must be 15 years of age.
Mentor Programs
The Youth Services Division coordinates with the Mayor's office, 911 Communications and the Sheriff's Department to provide tours of city facilities for elementary school students. Our office staff provides a brief history of the City and students have an opportunity to meet the Mayor and participate in a mock City Council meeting.
ROANOKE'S PROMISE
Roanoke is one of approximately 500 communities across our nation that is committed to fulfilling the Five Promises of America's Promise- The Alliance for Youth, led by General Colin L. Powell, USA (Ret). Mobilizing locally, we have formed diverse coalitions from the private, public and not-for-profit sectors and in working together we can generate more resources for youth. To be successful, we must collaborate with all sectors of the community - elected officials, schools, religious organizations, youth, not-for-profits, corporations and other partners from the public and private sectors. Collaboration enables us to channel our resources more efficiently. Each partner provides essential needs by leveraging our resources; such as, volunteers, funds, equipment, consulting expertise, facilities, and connections with other organizations, groups or individuals. We build on each of the Five Promises and when the lives of all local youth are transformed in this way, the entire community grows stronger.
