Solid Waste Management

Letter From Skip

A personal letter from the manager of Solid Waste Management, Mr. Frank W. “Skip” Decker III:

The Solid Waste Management Division of Public Works is the only division within the city of Roanoke who in some small way touches every household within the city on a weekly basis. Our task is to provide on-time collection service to all residents and businesses within the city. We try to instill a sense of environmental responsibility in all households and businesses to recycle whenever possible.

The City of Roanoke enjoys a very successful recycling program. Everyday we see more and more residents, as well as small businesses, requesting recycling bins and joining us in our recycling efforts. This I believe is due in part to the very successful school recycling program. On a weekly basis, Solid Waste Management is collecting a total of six to seven tons of paper recycling from all city schools. This program represents a win-win for not only the city but the school system as well.

Our recycling program is very easy to do. By following our City of Roanoke municipal calendar, residents place certain recyclables out every week for collection in containers provided by the Solid Waste Management . One week, residents can place newspapers, junk mail, magazines, computer paper, shredded paper, chipboard and corrugated boxes out for collection. The next week, residents can place clear glass, aluminum and tin cans and plastic bottles out for collection. Certain plastic items may be rejected. We only accept plastic items with a #1 or #2 in the recycling logo located on the bottom of the container.

Bulk and brush items continue to be an area of challenge. The challenge is to continue to make residents aware that only six bulk items can be placed out for collection. Whether these are six extra bags of trash or six pieces of furniture, they all equate to bulk items. Bulk and brush must both be set to the curb since alleys are too constrained to allow their collection. Brush must be limited to a pile no larger than a standard pick-up truck (4’X8’). Residents need to also be aware that Solid Waste Management cannot pick up any brush or landscape debris that has been placed to the curb by a contractor.

In summation, let’s all be environmentally sound residents, recycle whatever you can, please keep all trash contained in bags before placing in the automated containers, please make sure to remove the automated container from the street and alley directly after service. Let us all be proud to live, work and play in the “Star City”.

Thank you for recycling!!
