Roanoke Police Department

Tactical Response Team

The Roanoke Police Department formed a Tactical Response Team in September 1992, to address a need for solution to critical incident management.  The team’s main function is to provide support to patrol officers and detectives in high-risk situations.  Each team member must complete a minimum of 40 hours of instruction in areas of special weapons applications, use of force, less than lethal munitions, search and rescue techniques, and chemical restraints.  Each member receives additional training each month.  Members of the Tactical Response Team serve in other capacities within the agency, and are only called upon as a team during incidents where they are needed; incidents such as high-risk warrant entries and barricaded subjects.  Members are on stand-by around the clock.  Qualifications to become a member of the Tactical Response Team include successful completion of a physical agility test, psychological test and work-performance evaluations.
