Public Records Room

The Commonwealth of Virginia has a long and proud history of providing citizens with full access to records maintained by public officials. The public records room of the Office of the Clerk of Circuit Court has upheld this history since 1884 by providing the technology and staff by which any citizen may search the following records:

The Office of the Clerk of Circuit Court is responsible for recording documents in the above categories and maintaining them in accordance with state law. The public records room is open from 8:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., Monday through Friday except holidays.
Copies of records are available for $.50 per copied page. Copies may be certified by a deputy clerk for $2 for each copy of the entire document.
An online index of cases in the Roanoke City Circuit Court is available. Current ownership, assessment, and zoning information for properties in the city of Roanoke is available through the city's Geographic Information System.

Each circuit court clerk's office in Virginia holds only those records pertaining to actions or filings in that jurisdictions' circuit court. For example, only those marriage licenses issued in the city of Roanoke are recorded in the city of Roanoke. Particularly when researching land and probate records, you may find that the trail of records flows from one locality to another. The staff of this office will be happy to provide you with information on how to contact other offices of clerks of circuit court in Virginia.
