ROANOKE VALLEY LOCAL EMERGENCY PLANNING COMMITTEE (RVEPC)

The Roanoke Valley Emergency Planning Committee (RVEPC) was organized in 1988 and is discharging its responsibilities under Title III of the Superfund Amendment and Reauthorization Act of 1986. Under Title III, companies must tell their communities about chemicals that they make or use. Using this information, along with the knowledge of chemicals that are being transported, the RVEPC has developed an emergency plan that addresses response to hazardous materials incidents. The plan maps out transportation and evacuation routes, identifies facilities that store hazardous chemicals, identifies shelters and risk facilities and compiles other emergency information for instant utilization.

A copy of the Roanoke Valley Hazardous Materials Plan is located in the Office of Emergency Management for your review.

The RVEPC is mandated by the Commonwealth of Virginia, represents all important elements of the community and reflects the needs of those elements. The committee is comprised of representatives of local government, police, fire, emergency management, public health professionals, environmental, hospital and transportation officials, representatives of the cities of Roanoke and Salem, Roanoke County and the Town of Vinton. Also included in the membership are representatives of facilities, industry, community groups and the media from area jurisdictions. Committee meetings are held quarterly and are open to the public.

RVEPC Activities Include:

Developing and continually updating a chemical emergency preparedness and planning program.
Identifying the chemicals stored, used, manufactured or transported in the valley and determining the health risks that such chemicals pose to the public.
Developing training programs to enhance emergency response capabilities.
Conducting exercises to ensure the safety of the public and those who respond to emergencies.
Developing and conducting a public education and information program.
