Citizen Police Academy
The department is currently seeking participants for the next academy. The next class is scheduled to begin in September 2009.
Reinforcing the Thin Blue Line with Understanding and Education
The Roanoke Citizen Police Academy provides an excellent opportunity for citizens to gain a better perspective of the day to day operations of the Police Department. The academy is open to citizens who live and/or work in Roanoke, as well as family members of police officers. All participants are subject to a criminal background check. The Roanoke Police Department reserves the right to deny any persons with a criminal history. Applicants must be 21 years old or older.
Academies are offered twice a year. Students meet one night a week from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for 12 weeks. Topics taught include:
- Street Crimes Unit
- Uniform Patrols
- Evidence
- K-9 Demonstration
- Tactical Response Team
- Crime Prevention
- Shooting Range
- Drug Investigations
- Firearms Training
- Radar Enforcement
- Professional Standards Unit
- Mounted Patrol Unit
- Traffic and DUI
- Criminal Law
- Bike Patrol
- Tour 911 Center
- Officer Ride-A-Long
- School Resource Officer (SRO)/D.A.R.E.
- Riot Control
