The Valley Bookfest is an annual public literary festival offering readers of all ages the opportunity to celebrate the writing of emerging and published Virginia Writers. Valley Bookfest, an event of Roanoke Public Libraries, is held to promote literacy and life-long education and bring attention to one of the Roanoke Valley’s most vital resources—its public library system!
Friday, November 5, 2004 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. Valley Bookfest Opening Reception
Join us as we open this year’s festival. Festival Co-chairpersons Mayor C. Nelson Harris and Nancy Ruth Patterson will help the public library system as it celebrates the opening of its 2004 Valley Bookfest. The opening celebration will feature storytime readings for children, "meet-the-author opportunities" and reception.
Saturday, November 6th from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Valley Bookfest
The Roanoke Public Library System will host its third Valley Book Festival on Saturday, November 6, at the Main Library located at 706 South Jefferson Street, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. The event will celebrate the writing of emerging and published authors in a day-long series of readings, "meet- the-author opportunities", and book signings. The festival program will feature topics such as genealogy and local history, fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.
Adult Literacy Information Session--Main Library, Computer Trainig Center 1:30 - 2:30 p.m.
Representatives from Literacy Volunteers of Roanoke Valley and Refugee and Immigration Services will make presentations on the literacy services available to adults at their organizations. Handouts and brochure information will be available.
Author Book Signing- Main Library Second Floor, Mezzanine 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Participants of the Valley Bookfest will be signing books on the Main Library's Mezzanine Level.
Roanoke Times Book Club Information Session--Main Library, Computer Training Center
4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Beth Macy, Roanoke Times Writer, will talk about the Roanoke Times Book Club. Ms. Macy will also discuss how you can become a participant in monthly book club discussion and keep up the the latest news on book club activities.
The event is free and open to the public.

Area youth who have won area writing contest will be recognized at this event.
A special honor will be presented to former Youth Services Coordinator Demetria Tucker.
Event Partners: Blue Ridge Public Television’s Reading Rainbow, PTA-Reflections, Roanoke Valley Reading Council, and Roanoke Area Youth Substance Abuse Coalition-Red Ribbon Week Essay Contest.

Children’s Book Illustrator, Wil Clay and Young Adult Author Amanda Cockrell will discuss their work at this afternoon session.

T. J. Anderson, assistant professor of English at Hollins University and Theresa Burriss (not pictured), an instructor and director of the Learning Assistance Center at Radford University will offer session goers insight into Jazz Poetry and the work of Affilachian Poets respectively.

Dianne Swann-Wright, project historian and director of African-America and Special Programs at Monticello, will read from and discuss her book, A Way Out of No Way: Claiming Family and Freedom in the New South.
