Fill Your Bin and Win
For everyone who is able to recycle in the city of Roanoke, you are invited to participate in a new and exciting recycling initiative. This program has been developed by the Citizens for Clean and Green Committee, a group of local residents concerned about our environment, that operates under the city's Clean and Green umbrella.
The goal of the “Fill Your Bin and Win” program is to recognize residents and businesses that have been recycling with the City of Roanoke over the long term as well as those residents and businesses that just began recycling within the past three months. Overall, the Citizens for Clean and Green Committee wants to improve recycling awareness and increase participation in recycling by getting neighbors, friends and businesses to recycle regularly, and to join in the fun of the contest while helping to save our green earth.
Participants will have the chance to win $100!
Here is how the program works:
If you do not already have recycling bins, contact Solid Waste Management by calling 853-2000. You must have bins in order to participate.
To enter, submit your name, address, e-mail, phone number, and the serial numbers from your recycling bins on the form below. (NOTE: Some recycling bins might not have serial numbers; if not, your name and address will suffice.)
Those who do not have access to a computer may send name, address, phone number and bin serial numbers (if available) on a postcard to: Solid Waste Management, 1802 Courtland Road, Roanoke, VA 24012. (IMPORTANT: Participants who click on the “I Agree” button online, or who submit a postcard, are consenting to all terms of this contest.)
Once you complete your information online or send in a postcard, your name will be entered into a drawing for your section of the city for that quarter of the year. There will be one drawing per section during each calendar quarter: January-March; April-June; July-September; October-December.
The deadlines for entering each quarter’s drawing are: July 1; Oct. 1; Jan 1; April 1. If you wish to continue being in the drawing for each upcoming quarter, you must re-submit your information by each deadline.
All drawings are random. Once a name is picked, staff will check your bins to see if you are recycling. Check dates will not be announced, so you need to recycle often. If your name is drawn, and recycling activity is confirmed, you win!
If you are selected as a winner for your section of the city,
- Solid Waste Management will verify that indeed you do recycle with the city of Roanoke;
- You might be asked to appear or be interviewed on radio, local TV, or cable access channel;
- You will be asked to attend a City Council meeting to accept your award;
- You will be asked to appear and answer some questions from other citizens at the city's Leadership College;
- You will be asked to allow a city sign to be placed on your property for two weeks recognizing you as the winner. The city will place and remove the sign.
