Kiwanis Club of Roanoke

The Kiwanis Club of Roanoke has officially adopted South Jefferson Street, a stretch of the banks of the Roanoke River from Wasena Park to Memorial Hospital, and Washington Park/Lick Run Greenway as their bounden duty to keep clean. Cleanup activities are performed periodically.

On Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, about 20 members of the Kiwanis Club of Roanoke removed trash along the Lick Run Greenway trail between Burrell Street and 10th Street from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. About 50 tires, a hot water heater, parts of a refrigerator, other odd large pieces of junk, and approximately 30 bags of trash were brought to the trail and removed by Parks and Recreation staff, who made multiple trips to the trash transfer station. Additional trash was located, to be removed during a follow-up cleanup event by the Kiwanis Club in April.

On Saturday, March 7, 2009, Roanoke Kiwanians, participants from the Gainsboro YMCA, and Andy Payne of the City of Roanoke Parks and Recreation Department turned out to clean up Washington and Brown-Robertson Parks, and the Lick Run Greenway. Dozens of tires and tons of other trash were found and removed from these city parks by this hard-working group.
