Tips
Think "reusable" instead of disposable when it comes to things like coffee cups (and spoons), lunch bags, drink cups, tote bags, etc.
Be careful what you throw out. Don’t just toss old file folders, paper clips, binder clips, rubber bands, etc. "Glean" things that can be used again.
If your office has a recycling program, use it. If your office doesn’t have a recycling program, start one.
These tips from various sources can help you save water, energy and resources, and reduce carbon emissions in the atmosphere:
- When you mow your yard, don't bag and discard your grass clippings. Practice "mulch mowing" or "grasscycling," which allows loose clippings to nourish your lawn. Click here to learn more.
- When printing documents, use both sides of the paper.
- Create and use note pads from once-used paper.
- Buy in bulk and transfer the products to your own reusable containers.
- While shopping, if you only buy a few products skip the shopping bag. For larger purchases, bring your own bags.
- When possible, carpool, bus, bike, or walk to your destination.
- Conserve fuel by keeping your car in good condition. Get your engine tuned up regularly, change the oil, and keep your tires inflated properly.
- When buying new appliances or electronics, shop for the highest energy-efficiency rating. Look for a yellow and black Energy Guide label on the product.
- Switch the light bulbs in your home or office to compact fluorescent bulbs.
- Turn off lights and other electrical appliances such as televisions and radios when you're not using them.
- Weatherize your home or apartment. Seal and caulk around windows and doors. Make sure your home has adequate insulation.
