Citizen Police Academy
Reinforcing the Thin Blue Line with Understanding and Education
The Roanoke Citizen Police Academy provides an excellent opportunity for citizens to gain a better perspective of the day-to-day operations of the Police Department. The academy is open to citizens who live and/or work in Roanoke, as well as family members of police officers. All participants are subject to a criminal background check. The Roanoke Police Department reserves the right to deny any persons with a criminal history. Applicants must be 21-years-old or older.
Academies are offered twice a year. Students meet one night a week from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for 12 weeks. Topics taught include:

- Uniform Patrols
- Evidence
- K-9 Demonstration
- Tactical Response Team
- Crime Prevention
- Shooting Range
- Drug Investigations
- Firearms Training
- Radar Enforcement
- Professional Standards Unit
- Mounted Patrol Unit
- Traffic and DUI
- Criminal Law
- Bike Patrol
- Tour 911 Center
- Officer Ride-A-Long
- School Resource Officer (SRO)/D.A.R.E.
- Riot Control
