The City of Roanoke's Surplus Process allows for items, no longer needed by a department, to be offered to, and claimed by, other City departments for official City use.

The process allows for City departments to submit an item, still in good and usable condition, into surplus.  The term good and usable is defined as an item which can still be utilized, and is free of major defects such as dents, chips, tears, or missing pieces.  Once accepted into surplus, items are made available to any City department for one week (Tuesday to Tuesday) on a first come first serve basis.  Departments should inquire with the contact person listed with the surplus item if interested in the item.  It is the responsibility of the departments to schedule the relocation of claimed surplus.  There is no storage area available for surplus items.  Items must remain in the departments until they are claimed.  Items not claimed by other City departments are made available to the City School System.

Any NON ELECTRONIC surplus item not claimed by either City departments or City School System are then either recycled or disposed of.  Items that may be recycled include: plastic, glass, and metal items.  All items that can not be recycled are taken to the landfill.  Items to be disposed of will be collected once a week, on Wednesdays, by Solid Waste, and taken to the appropriate disposal or recycling location.  It is the responsibility of the departments to arrange for the items to be taken to the collection location located in front of the Dumpsters on the 2nd Street side of the Municipal Building.  Items must be at the collection location by Noon on Wednesdays for collection by Solid Waste.

Any ELECTRONIC surplus items that remain unclaimed are handled by DoT to be disposed of properly.  Electronic items include any item with a cord, requires a charge, cell phones, computers, copy machines, etc.

Please see the "Current Surplus" Tab for a list of current City Surplus Items.  The list is updated each week.
